Key Issues Facing The City of Norman
Norman’s Unhoused
Norman deserves a balanced and realistic approach to homelessness one that helps people who truly want help while also protecting families, businesses, and public safety. Our current system places too much burden on neighborhoods, first responders, and local businesses, while not doing enough to ensure accountability from those who refuse available services.
Homelessness is not a single issue; it includes veterans, people facing economic hardship, and individuals struggling with addiction or mental health. Those who want a path forward should have access to shelter, treatment, and support programs that help them rebuild their lives. That is compassion and it’s the right thing to do.
But compassion must never come at the expense of public safety. Norman residents deserve safe parks, safe streets, and a thriving local economy. We must ensure that criminal behavior, open drug use, and repeated disturbances are addressed firmly and consistently. Helping those who want help does not mean tolerating behavior that harms our community.
Ok Turnpike
I support responsible infrastructure, but not when it comes at the expense of homeowners and taxpayers. The way OTA has handled past turnpike proposals shows why Oklahoma does not need two transportation agencies. OTA’s lack of oversight, compared to ODOT, creates confusion and allows eminent domain to be pushed far too easily onto families who have everything to lose.
I won’t pretend the city council can control OTA, but I will make this commitment: I will stand with Norman residents every time these issues reach the city level. I will not support any measure that enables forced land takings, weakens property rights, or places bureaucratic agendas above the people. Norman deserves representation that listens, protects, and refuses to look the other way.
TIF Funding
The Arena TIF proposal has brought out passionate opinions on both sides, and I respect the sincerity behind each perspective. Some believe the development could bring economic energy and new opportunities; others worry about financial risk, long-term tax implications, and the impact on our schools and services. TIFs can be valuable tools when used appropriately.
My role is not to take sides in a way that divides our community, but to make sure every decision is based on the long-term health of Norman. I’m here to bring us together by focusing on facts, fairness, and the future of our city. I believe major projects deserve clear communication, open dialogue, and careful evaluation of both benefits and consequences.
No matter how anyone feels about the Arena TIF, we all deserve decisions grounded with respect for taxpayer dollars.
